Connie Potter's One Minute Interview
Wogan:
Why the Polar Challenge?
Potter:
Since I was a young girl I've been interested in Arctic adventure, after I'd finished uni and had saved a few hundred pounds I decided to find out about it. I'd obviously slightly under estimated the cost and amount of organisation of such an adventure but found out about The Polar Challenge race and the plans began. Plus I reckon I could be the shortest person ever to reach the Magnetic North Pole!
Wogan:
How did you decide on the name Lost Penguins?
Potter:
Well, I hope we're better in the race than we are at chosing team names. For a few days it looked likely that we'd be called The Good the Bad and the Ugly or Look North (cos of our northern roots and the regional BBC news programme) but after Mike had had a few drinks he came up with Lost Penguins. Sometimes it takes a bit of explaining because people don't always know that there are no penguins in the Arctic.
Wogan:
Why Mike?
Potter:
Do you mean am I scraping the barrel having Mike as a team mate? Well, I guess I haven't met that many people who could commit to the training and after I spent a week beating him in races on the slopes in the Alps I knew how determined and competitive (if not stupid) he is.
Wogan:
It's going to be pretty cold, how do you think you'll cope?
Potter:
Better than Mike - he moans when it's cold in his flat. Wind chill can take temperatures to as low as minus 70! Before the race we're going to try and add three stone of blubber each to help with the cold and also give us more fuel.
Wogan:
How are you going to go about putting on so much weight?
Potter:
Well you know, it will be tough! Lots of chocolate, midnight feasts and I might have to up the amount of alcohol I drink - I can't wait! The downside is that whilst we're racing we'll have a strict diet filled with minging food - 3 weeks of it! Racing is going to require about 6000 calories a day and what we don't get through our diet we'll burn off our waists (hopefully not my chest).
Wogan:
What about the Polar Bears doesn't that put you off?
Potter:
I'm actually kind of hoping that we see one - they're awesome animals. Before we start the race we'll be well trained for dealing with unfriendly encounters with them. My sister's got some hair-brained idea that if it came to it we'll be able to fend them off with Foxes Glaciar Mints but in case that doesn't work and the worst happens we'll have a gun to scare them off with.
Wogan:
Your sister's obviously a nut! Good Luck!
